Kitchen Remodel

Get ready for a long one people....there're about 8 million pictures headed your way.  Back nearly 3 years ago when we moved into this house I quickly added the kitchen counters to our to-do list.  They were made out of tile....yep, tile.  Like grouted tile.  I hated them from the day we moved in and have been looking forward to this day every since.

Just to remind you, here are some pictures from the day we closed on the house.  See that car seat on the counter there...I think there might just be a tiny 5 week old baby in there!!

About a month ago now things finally started to get real.  We'd finally ordered out counters and it was delivery day!! See those open cabinets along the wall....yep, we are finally doing something with the awkward eat in kitchen space and extending our counters...adding more cabinet space.  Nothing is ever easy though and we couldn't find matching cabinets at the store anymore.  Luckily for me, I'm married to a carpenter and he was able to build ones to match our existing cabinets.

We were lucky in that respect.  The cabinets that came with the house were in really good condition and not dated looking at all so we were able to keep them helping to greatly reduce the cost of this project!

See ya later crappy tile counter tops!!  Out with the old and in with the new!!!

What do you think?  Aren't they great?!?!!  We added about 10 inches to the end of the island making enough room to add a third stool there.

Plus all that extra space along the windows.  The picture is bad...it's too dark but that's what you're getting for today folks.  I'm too tired to take another one :)

The cabinet right next to the dishwasher is actually a pull out garbage/recycling area.  Then next to that is three pull out drawers (we need a filler for the door space still).  And then a bank of drawers along the wall.  You can see from this picture that the walls are still torn open.  We've got electric work to do including under cabinet lighting and pendant lights for above the island but we're getting there.  Once the electric is done we can move onto the back splash and I simply can not WAIT to show you what we have picked out.  It's amazing!

Oh and this often forgotten but highly used space got a face lift too.  When we moved in, this area right off the garage (right) and kitchen (walking towards the camera) was the laundry room.  We moved that to the basement and added these awesome cabinets a long time ago but I don't think I ever blogged about it.  We originally added a simple laminate counter top but got lucky and there was just enough granite left over to do this space as well.  So it's all tied together now and looks great!!!  Do you love it?  I sure do!

We've been working hard on some projects around the house lately including Abby's big girl room.  I'm waiting for a few prints for the walls and then I'll be back to share that new room with you as well....so stay tuned for more house updates headed your way!
